There are seven basic phases of the Healthy Children Healthy
Futures targeted after school program:
- Snacks and Physical Activity
- Getting Started
- Media Literacy
- Developing Messages
- Creating Media
- Recognition Celebration
- Parent and Community Participation
All activities are aligned to national education standards.
The young people who participate in Healthy Children Healthy Futures
in after school settings:
- Learn the 8 Habits
of Healthy Kids™ and the skills to incorporate
the habits into their lifestyle and environment.
- Increase their awareness and knowledge of healthy eating and physical
activity concepts and issues.
- Work in teams to produce healthy eating and physical activity media
including print ads, radio spots, and animation.
- Have their efforts and media products recognized in a meaningful
way and rewarded.
- Use program resources to communicate with peers, families, and communities
about healthy eating and physical activity.
- Provide parents and family members with
the 8 Habits of Healthy Kids™ information.
It is anticipated that children will obtain:
- Knowledge, attitudes and skills to make healthier lifestyle choices
regarding eating and physical activity.
- Skills to become advocates for healthy eating and physical activity
at their schools and in their communities.
- Skills to promote healthy eating and physical activity behaviors
to their peers via media messaging.
- Teamwork and interpersonal communication skills.
- Skills and knowledge that may inspire new career choices.
- Critical thinking skills, especially regarding how they explore
and experience the media.
- Practice, through an interdisciplinary approach, at improving their
academic performance in language arts, math, technology and media literacy.
- Increased technology awareness and skills through the use of animation
software (when applicable).
