What Are Healthy Snacks?

Healthy snacks are nutritious, mini-meals that contain vitamins and minerals, rather than empty calories from sugar and fat.
Healthy snacks should give you energy, but not fill you up too much.

Why Do I Need to Snack More on Healthy Foods and Less on Junk Food?
Snacking is a normal and important part of the diet, but snacking on too many sweets, chips, junk food and drinking soda can cause weight gain, particularly in those individuals who are not physically active.
Snacking on healthy foods instead of junk food can help to prevent excess weight gain and provide the body with longer lasting energy.

What Are Junk Foods?

Junk foods contain high amounts of sugar and fat and are high in calories. Junk foods include many store bought cookies, candy, cakes and chips.
Drinks that contain a lot of calories and sugar with little nutritional value include soda, fruit punch, juices that are not 100% fruit juice, and bottled ice tea and lemonade that have added sugar.

When Do I Need To Eat Healthy Snacks?
You need to eat snacks only when you are hungry and not just because the snack is available.
If you eat a healthy snack when you get home from school, you will still be hungry for dinner.
A healthy snack in the evening, such as a bowl of low-sugar cereal or fresh fruit, is a good choice.

Should I Eat Snacks in Front of the TV?
Eating snacks or meals in front of the TV is not a good idea. You become less aware of what you are eating and may eat more than usual.
Most of the commercials on TV are for junk food snacks, which you may be tempted to eat while watching TV.
