What does it mean to be physically active?

  • Physical activity means moving your body.
  • Activities such as walking, running, biking, dancing, playing basketball and jumping rope are examples.
How much physical activity do you need?
At least one hour every day will benefit your:
Heart
Lungs
Bones
Muscles
Blood pressure

Why do you need to be physically active ?

Regular physical activity ( everyday):
Helps build strong bones.
Helps and develops muscles and joints.
Maintains a healthy body weight.
Helps reduce body fat.
Maintains normal lung function.
Improves overall feeling of wellbeing.
Improves body image and mood.
Increases school performance.
Develops and strengthens a healthy heart.

What activities will move your body?
Dancing, Walking, Running, Biking, Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, Football, Hockey, Skating, Swimming, Tennis, Gymnastics, Playing tag, Jumping Rope, Swinging on the swings, Skateboarding, Cheerleading

How can you get at least 1 hour of physical activity each day?

TURN OFF THE TV and play outside!
Find physical activities you enjoy Join a team sport or after school physical activity program
Set a goal for yourself everyday
Be active with a friend, buddy or family member
Have fun and get into a routine, such as: Playing outside or in the park after school
Playing basketball or baseball
Tossing a Frisbee with a friend

Does recess or gym at school count as physical activity?
Over the years, gym class has not been offered in many schools due to lack of money. Many schools may not offer recess in order to give more time for classes. So, if you do get gym and recess, use this time to run around with your friends and be active.
