• Dairy products, such as milk, yogurt and cheese are the best sources of calcium in the American diet. • Boys and girls, ages 9-18, need 1300 mg of calcium each day-One 8 ounce glass of milk provides 300 of those mgs. • 3 servings of high calcium foods everyday will reduce risks of osteoporosis (weakening of the bones), high blood pressure and colon cancer. Calcium can be found in broccoli, soybeans and orange juice as well as milk and dairy products. • Your bones are growing fast now and this is when calcium is needed and used the most. • Your bones are done growing in length by the time you are 19 years old. • One plain yogurt has about 1/3 of the calcium you need for the whole day. • Flavored milks, like chocolate and strawberry, are still very healthy and helpful to your body since only a small amount of sugar is added. |
