FOOD GROUPS TO ENCOURAGE
• Consume enough fruits and vegetables while staying
within calorie needs.
For a 2,000 calorie plan, eat 2 cups of fruit and 2½ cups veggies each
day.
• At least half of total grains consumed should
be whole grains.
• Consume 3 cups per day of fat-free or low-fat
milk or the equivalent.
FAT
• Keep total fat intake between 20 to 35 percent
of calories, with most fats
coming from monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
SALT
• Consume less than 2,300 mg salt per day (that’s about 1 teaspoon)
and
include potassium-rich foods, such as veggies and fruits.
SUGAR
• Choose and prepare foods with little added sugars
