Step 1: Review the materials in the Tool Kit.
Step 2: Review/discuss the materials with your principal, school officials, other
interested parents, and community leaders.
Step 3: Make a plan to use the materials at workshops, parent meetings, and/or
school or community events.
Parent Tool Kit includes the following materials:

1. A Parent’s Guide to Healthy Eating and Physical Activity
This 100-page book contains parent-friendly information on:

8 Habits of Healthy Kids™, the core of the HCHF program

Successful Shopping Strategies and Quick Menu Planning

Nutrition and exercise guidelines based on the Food Pyramid

30 fun family recipes by parents from Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York City

2. A Series of Four Parent Brochures with matching Parent Scripts
(English & Spanish)
Four special brochures, based on requests from parents, were designed to help
parent advocates provide information to other parents on targeted healthy eating and physical activity topics.
Three brochures: Team Up with the 8 Habits of Healthy Kids™ to Prevent Diabetes; Understand Food Labels; and Get Families Active After School - open up to 11 x 17 posters, each with valuable ways to adopt healthier eating and physical activity habits for the family.
The fourth brochure in the series, The “A” List of Healthy Snacks, features the best parent snack recipes as rated and graded by kids.
Along with information from A Parent’s Guide to Healthy Eating and Physical Activity, parent advocates discuss and distribute the brochures in workshops, parent meetings, or school/community events. For each of the four brochures, a script with step-by-step presentation tips, talking points, and “fun things to do” is available to help parent advocates easily present information to other parents. *

3. CD-ROMs
CD-ROMs with files in PDF format provide the opportunity for parent advocates to
reprint copies of A Parent’s Guide to Healthy Eating and Physical Activity and the
Series of Four Brochures/Scripts at their school/community site or through a local
community printer.
Important Note: Information in HCHF brochures and scripts is not intended as medical advice.
