 Focus your discussion on Type 2 diabetes, since it's the most common form and is preventable.
 People who gain weight are at greater risk for diabetes.
 Losing weight can decrease risk for diabetes.
 Ask others to share their personal diet/weight management success stories or tips.
 Tell participants that there is a “Diabetes Risk Test” they can take at:

Healthy Behaviors to Help Prevent Diabetes
 Exercise is a very important “healthy behavior” to prevent diabetes.
 Suggest that there's no need to run a marathon, walking counts!
 Share ideas on getting 30 minutes of walking or other activity 5 days a week. You might ask, “What do you do to stay active?” Write ideas on a flip chart or chalkboard.

Parents Team Up with Kids to Prevent Diabetes

 Focus discussion on the “right sized” portions. Bring in a deck of cards, audiocassette tape, tennis ball, or any other objects to use as visuals for portion sizes.
  Share some or all of these ideas:

1 medium size fruit                 Tennis ball or your fist
1 1/2 ounces cheese               9-volt battery or 3 dominoes
