Launching an After-School Physical Activity Program
• Refer parents to the guidelines in the
brochure. Explain that experts tell us that kids need 60 minutes of
physical activity each day and that adults need anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes
a day.
• Discuss briefly that being physically
active can help to limit the rise in obesity in the community. In many
neighborhoods, nearly 50% of parents and kids are overweight due to unhealthy
eating and lack of physical activity.
• Physical activity events and programs
can be a fun way for parents and kids to spend time together.
Moderate and Vigorous Physical Activity Ideas
• Explain to participants that physical
activity programs can be as simple as planning a family dancing event
with music (chosen by the kids) or starting an aerobic dance class for parents/kids
after school. Or parents
may want to do an on-going physical activity event such as organizing a “Keep
the School Yard Beautiful”
campaign with effort from kids and families.
• Ask participants what they consider to
be fun from the Moderate and Vigorous Physical Activity lists.
Fun
Things
• Demonstrate an activity from the list of moderate and vigorous physical
activity ideas presented.
An example of this would be to put on some music and ask everyone to move to
the beat (moderate
activity). Then provide (if available) a few jump ropes and ask for volunteer
participants to jump rope or do
jumping jacks to the beat of the music (vigorous activity). |
